Hermokrates, or Krates for short, was born the son of a farmer in 453 BCE. He served as a rower on an Athenian trireme during the Peloponnesian War, and was in the unfortunate and doomed reinforcement fleet that went to Sicily in 413 BCE. He survived the capsizing of his ship and joined up with the army commanded by the general Nicias. The army eventually surrendered and he, along with the rest, was sent to work in a quarry pit. Luckily he knew enough Euripides to be bought as a household slave by a wealthy Sicilian farmer who thought him an actor. He later stowed aboard on a ship and made his way back to Athens.
He is now unemployed and forty-nine, living with his eldest daughter and her husband in Athens. He refuses to speak about happened in Sicily. He isn’t as religious as he ought to be; his experiences have left him jaded, and he simply pays lip service to the gods to make his family happy. He’s one of the quietest members of Athens’s assembly, but weighs the options more carefully than some of the younger members.
((Character based on the Retired Sailor archetype from The Threshold of Democracy: Athens in 403 BC, which is the property of Barnard. PB is here, and used without permission.))
